Melissa Auf der Maur: My ’90s Rock Photographs is making its world debut at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). A photographic love letter to the last analogue decade, the exhibition presents more than 200 photographs from Auf der Maur’s personal archive, offering an intimate insider’s view of the ’90s alternative music scene before smartphones and digital recording. The exhibition stands as a moving self-portrait of a young artist living through the era, a time capsule of Generation X and a reference for future generations.
The exhibition is co-curated by Sophie Hackett and Jim Shedden.

Part rock memoir, part travel diary, part psychedelic scrapbook, Even the Good Girls Will Cry is a behind-the-scenes rock ’n’ roll memoir with a soulful intimacy and mystic undertone that sets it apart from memoirs by her peers. It is a vivid dispatch from the last analog decade, artistically capturing that bygone era in all its messy, angsty glory.

Melissa Auf der Maur’s first new music in 15 years, BASS WOMB ROOM: My ’90s 4-Track Demos x Field Recordings brings together the ambient yet noisy score of her AGO installation with never-before-heard songs written and recorded at home in Los Angeles in the ’90s. There is a purity and innocence in these recordings in stark contrast to the major-label rock music she was making in the studio with Hole at the time.

This is a small sized print - an OG photo lab style print - which is how Melissa would process, view and edit her photographs on the road. C-Prints are a traditional type of photographic print created using a chromogenic process, where light is used to expose a paper coated with silver halide and dye layers, which are then developed with chemicals.

Shot by Melissa, with her trusted 28mm point and shoot, Nikon camera, from the stage on the Beautiful Monsters tour in 1999. This ill fated tour, with co-headliner Marilyn Manson, was Hole's final USA tour.
Auf der Maur obsessively documented her time in the bands Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins from 1994-2001 as they toured around the world.
This photo is used as the wraparound cover of her upcoming memoir, Even The Good Girls Will Cry: A ‘90s Rock Memoir.
This is the first time a photo from the archive is available to the public.
