taiwan typhoon trip take two

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

so, we arrived at the taipei airport.
after a smooth and easy 32 hour travel day;
3 flights
3 bad meals
3 bad movies.

“a typhoon is coming”
said our local host on the way to the hotel.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

“again?!”
yes, two typhoons in one attempt of a festival,
but this time we had already arrived,
no turning back,
wait, watch the rain,
and hope to do something musical while there.

this annual summer festival takes place on the beach,
the side of the island that was hit by these two typhoons,
the stage was swallowed by the lady of the sea, twice.

we were basically stuck in a hyatt hotel,
eating a free unlimited breakfast buffet,
and hoping to play.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

all of the bands involved;
black rebel motorcycle club,
boom boom satellites (japan)
vincent gallo
baseball (australia)
and us,
really wanted to play!
it was crazy to have travelled around the world,
and not get to share our sounds…..

so the night of the typhoon,
while the city was officially closed for business,
and the government suggests you stay indoors,
we played the one and only tiny rock club in taiwan.
the wall (capacity 200) was the place of our late typhoon celebration.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it was a fantastic show,
the crowd was great, starving for rock!!
all the bands gave their best,
brmc finished up the show at 5:30 am….
it was a wild trip,
strange indeed….

That show must have been cool… sorry to sound ignorant, but what band are you in?

Hope you’re allright. Love to hear what you played. We’re all vunerable to the inclemencies of the weather these days.

    Crisis, what crisis?

    A Welcome Visitor

He and the moon passed quietly through the wild tangle of trees that covered the hill. On the edge of the clearing they stopped and kissed underneath an evening sky that was a smooth blend of lavender and indigo. Smooth, like the feel of the moon’s soft skin against his own. Their bodies moulded and shifted together, weaving a passionate and compelling design, a tapestry of touch.

    This was cool.

Laughing, the moon broke away and glided playfully to the top of the hill.

“Where are you going?” he asked nervously.

“Just here,” she answered from the crest. “I wish to see the world away from the woods, to gaze upon the slumbering land as it lies cloaked in darkness.”

He made to follow, but halted at the wood’s edge. For some reason he felt uneasy about leaving the silent shadows beneath the trees.

“Come on, you!” she called. “What’s the matter? It’s a glorious night!”

He tried to move, but could not. She was an ethereal glow before him, crowned with stars. He looked around and the world seemed to spin, but he did not. He was static, an extraterrestrial fulcrum. A wave of anxiety washed through him and he glanced back to the moon with uncertainty.

“Do not fear.” she said, and he did not. “You shall not fail, no matter how they assail you. The traps they set in your path are flawed and prosaic, and thy spirit is something that can be neither denied nor destroyed. Do not lose faith, for there are friends to be found in the world, as well as enemies.”

It was almost as if she smiled then, and her soft silhouette shimmered in the dark air before him like a pale, evanescent spectre. “Endeavour to inspire hope rather than despair, even if you have none yourself.” she said, and the soft melody of her words soothed his feelings of savage insecurity. ” You may come to find that fear and doubt do not necessarily imply weakness, for the experience of such things may provide you with hidden strength when your dreams lie broken at your feet.”

She rose up into the night sky. Up, up, up, she went, and her surface spread out and opened wide, like two vast wings. These glowing sails hovered in the sky for a time, searching, and then quickly came together with a flash of light.

    She had captured a star.

“Hello-.” she said, bringing the star down to where he stood.

Saying nothing, he reached out to receive this wondrous gift, but the light changed-

    Yellow.

    Bright amber.

    Then gold.

The star began to change shape: sprouting luminous eyes, two fins and a tail.

    It was a fish.

    A glowing gold fish.

He stared at the fish and the fish stared back.

    “-bloop. -”

The Madrokk remembered where he was.

He was still in the coral cell, yet the cell door now stood open and the bright gold fish floated before him, bringing light into his dark world of confinement. Looking closer, he noticed a small seaweed tether tied to the back of the fish’s tail.

The Madrokk followed the length of the fibrous cord with his eyes.

A green tentacle held the tether.

Not really wanting to, he pulled his focus out from the tentacle to find himself confronted by its owner, a giant snail with an enormous, spiralling shell. Her eyes rising from atop her head on long flexible stalks. They stretched towards him in the golden light, staring at him with frank, unblinking curiosity.

    “Hello–.” said the snail.

    “AHHH—!” screamed the Madrokk.

“OOOO!” screeched the snail in reply, and then disappeared quickly into her shell.

“EEEE!” added the gold fish and extinguished his light.

The cell remained dark and quiet for some time.

“Sorry about that.” said the Madrokk after awhile.

The gold fish released a sigh of relief, along with a faint glow. “By the Egg Men’s shells, don’t DO THAT!” he cried. “You almost gave me a bloody coronary.”

“Can fish have coronaries?” asked the Madrokk.

“I dunno, it was either that or one of those burst vein, situations.”

“I see.” said the Madrokk, glancing uneasily towards the snail; noting with discomfort that an eyestalk was poking out at them from inside her shell. “Yowza! Does she always do that?”

“Yeah, I find it a bit unnerving as well.” answered the glow fish. “Hey, come on Gaz! Come out of your shell.”

Gastropoda slowly flowed from her shell like lime jelly, her eyes moving warily around on the top of wobbly stalks. “I too must apologise for my reaction, but I’m afraid you quite startled me.”

“That seems to be the general consensus.” answered the Madrokk. “But I suppose I should be getting used to this sort of thing .You know, talking mice, snails and fish; what’s to be surprised about? I guess sometimes you just have to sort of wing it.”

“You are a student of philosophy–?” asked Gastropoda.

“Unintentionally.” said the Madrokk. “But allow me to introduce myself: I am the Madrokk, an accidental visitor to your watery realm. I come from the world of dry land and open sky.”

“A surface dweller–!” gasped the gold fish. “I thought you an odd-looking creature, but I assumed you suffered from some kind of birth defect–.”

“Let’s not get into that right now.”

“Yes,” nodded Gastropoda. “That explains much, but also raises many more questions. For instance, who had you confined to this cell?”

“I’m not sure.” said the Madrokk. “ It was kind of a crazy scene, but I seem to recall a kind of large worm on a tricked-out bicycle.”

“What’s a bicycle?” asked the gold fish.

The Madrokk shrugged. “One less than a tricycle?”

“I believe the surface dweller is referring to Barak Kudah.” interrupted Gastropoda. “The worm holes are generally his jurisdiction, after that abominable temple.”

The gold fish shivered at the mention of the priest’s name; causing its light to oscillate around the cell. “Kudah!”

Gastropoda remained unshaken. “There are many things you and I must discuss, Mad Rock, but this is not the place to do so. You must come with us, we can take you somewhere more-um, accommodating.”

“Sounds good to me.” said the Madrokk. “I mean, not that I want to complain or anything, but I think the hospitality in this place sucks! Hey, that reminds me of a joke-.”

“Not here, not now!” yelped the gold fish.

“The wormholes are no place for humour.” agreed Gastropoda.

The Madrokk shrugged. “If not here, then where-?”

Woo Excellent stuff! I see Julien has shorter hair now. Now that is one looooong flight. And unlimited breakfast Buffet is always good. Shame about more typhoons though. Capacity 200, that is amazing I literally would have given my arm to be there.

I hope recording is all going well, obviously next year is very anticipated by everyone on the forums and in general! And Melissa, prepare for Scrapbook 2!

  4. IceShaft says:

Eheh sounds like a fascinating adventure!
Oh well even if you didn’t play at the scheduled place, you played at least and it seems that you liked that anyway. This is what counts after all ;)

  5. bz1978 says:

Hi, I am a Taiwanese joining the fantastic live show taken place in The Wall last weekend.
Just want to say thanks for your excellent performance.
Btw, the capacity of the Wall is around 700 to 1000. At least 2000 people tried to squeeze into the packed room but only 600 to 700 people were permitted to enter the venue.
Hope you visit here again and we all feel happy that you like the tiny island. (and the typhoon as well)

  6. Tempest says:

That is crazy that another typhoon came. Glad that everyone still got to play!

  7. Artorius says:

Nice to hear that everything went ok in Taiwan. I hope you enjoy playing over there. Congratulations!

  8. MdMb says:

    Yay! Adventure times!
It sounds like a really good trip. Even though tou had to take three different flights…hahahaha! :)
I hope you’ve enjoyed your performance. Playing live can get you the weirdest feelings. Almost too excited about anything. It’s really crazy. And always good!
    Thanks for sharing your experience.
    Huge hug!

  9. mayonaise says:

Hi, I’m a friend from Taiwan and I was at the hot and sweaty little basement show of yours, too.

Just want to say that it’s soooooooo wonderful to have you here at this year’s Hohiyan festival. If it hadn’d been you(and BRMC), I wouldn’t have come. Being a fan of yours since you with the Pumpkins, to see you and your band’s live performance is quite a dream came true:) Thank you for such a great night with fantastic music!

Well, hope to see you again in Taipei. Try coming at spring. Taiwan is much prettier during the season.
(and, of course, no Typhoons too! ha ha~)

Hey Melissa, Stevie, Jordan, Bazza (Barry) and ADM gang. It was so great to meet and play with you in Taiwan. What a crazy experience. What an awesome night. We all wish we could have stayed longer and hung out at Underworld with you folk and stuff.

Baseball finally got home yesterday. We had to fly via japan (and felt an earthquake) and Ho Chi Minh city. It snowed here near Melbourne today, what a contrast. We have our homecoming show this weekend. We’re totally over the moon about everything.

Hope to meet up with you again sometime.

Interesting how the effects of Mother Nature can cause serious inconviences. Certainly Eastern Culture promotes the concept crisis/opportunity??? Truly a special notion that we in the Western world could prescribe to.

hi melissa, you’ve likely forgotten but we talked a month or two ago in vancouver via narduwar’s radio show. i called in with a question even though i didn’t really have one because i felt a bit embarrassed that no one else was… which was kind of silly because one of the things that makes narduwar great is his imperviousness to embarrassment. thanks for the tip on what you were reading. i just finished `the pilgrim’ as recommended. i liked it but not as much as you did. maybe i’m not ready to give up the jung i thought i knew. as for leonardo, yow. was he really that cruel?

topic switch: i’m working on an environmental book together with a photographer friend. it’s a collection of stories from people who’ve had life-changing experiences in the outdoors, whether big (a bear ate my breakfast) or small (i watched my child discover caterpillars). all adding up to a lesson on how nature (which can be anywhere from an inner city empty lot to the annapurna circuit) shapes the people we are, or hope to be.

i suspect you’d be perfect for it. any good ideas? anyone? my blog is lagging but this email address ought to work by replacing the @ mark: ecourbanistATgmail.com

    So, Taiwan eh?

    Take two you say?

Wise old chinese man once say, never must the man visit the land of typhoon storms, and unlimited breakfast buffets too boot. What were you expecting, unlimited food, upsets the galatic balance of heaven and earth. The mutiliated animals of the world unite to create the formula of what is to be in the future and past alike, for they are one and the same. Infactuated as we may be with what is in our future, we must first look to the actions of our past. For without piecing togeather the skellitions of our past ancestors and they’re, seemingly, deranged logic may we truley unlock the essence of the karma that weaves its delicate way through all the minerals and oranisms of this planet, though it be molested by the hands of man.

Wise chinese man also say, the man who wish to shorten the hair so generously provided by the oversears of this universe might as well spit in the face of his creators and endure all the wrath that they deliver as they are dissmissed from the order of the world.

I was searching for Elvis and somehow ended up in your blog, but you know I’m sure I saw Elvis in the supermarket yesterday.

No honest really, he was right there in front of me, next to the steaks singing “Love me Tender”.

He said to me (his lip was only slightly curled) “Boy, you need to get yourself a shiny, new plasmatv to go with that blue suede sofa of yours.

But Elvis said I, In the Ghetto nobody has a plasma tv .

Dude I’m All Shook Up said Elvis. I think I’ll have me another cheeseburger then I’m gonna go home and ask Michael Jackson to come round and watch that waaaay cool surfing scene in Apocalypse Now on my new plasma tv .

And then he just walked out of the supermarket singing. . .

“You give me love and consolation,
You give me strength to carry on “

    Strange day or what? :-)
