blizzards are weird. they can snow you in, or snow you out.
they are beautiful, white and windy.
the blizzard of 2005 broke my plumbing.
frozen, explosion, then evacuation.
just as i was getting the wires hooked up and neck of my guitar cozy in my hand… my system broke down.
so a brief visit to nyc was called for, while the handy irish plumber took control of my home.
i went to the MOMA yesterday and saw a lot of art.
wonderful klimpt sketches, architectural theories and lots of cindy sherman photos.
arts, culture and friends in nyc. fine with me,
but the plumbing made me do it!

I don’t think that’s ever happened to me before…not that I can remember. well i’m sure it was a small adventure, at least
I love Ny, but I don’t think I want to live here anymore. Living here my whole life has made me immune to the beauty of the city. I want to start over somewhere else.

Terrible news about the plumbing, but at least you got to go to NYC and have a good time!
I worked on a project around ten years ago to write up a business plan for a Farmers Market. We were setup in a house that had at one time been a group home. At any rate, there was a back room that had a small hatch in the wall that went into a subteranean nook dug into the ground with the water tank and many pipes in it. There was always a horrible draft coming out from under that hatch, so we stuffed a blanket against it over night. We came back the next morning and just as we were about to get started for the day, we heard a loud bang and then suddenly the sound of gushing water. What a horrible sight to behold when we opened up that hatch. The room quickly started filling up with water but luckily the break in the pipe was before the valve, so we were able to turn it off. Uhm, I don’t think there was much of a point to the story…other than sharing a similar experience.
Carry on.
It was about… mmm… two years ago.
It wasn’t snow, it was rain. But it ruined a whole wall of my house ^^U
I wish we had snow, here in Ireland. It never happens which kinda sucks, or if it does it melts in like an hour. Again that sucks.
But then at-least I don’t get any blizzards.
gOTTa Go, Peace out (“,)
oh that’s not cool at all, but as often happens, even in bad situations you can find or do something that makes it not that bad after all

I’ve been reading your blog. I hope you don’t mind. It’s a shame about the plumbing hope it gets fixed soon. Have fun in Nyc!
Hope all is okay with your plumbing now!
xMArKx !!
I just saw snow for the first time in my life this past Christmas and it was amazing. In the morning the bright white was so pretty when I looked outside, but then it all melted away and it is going to be probably years until it snows again, that was like once in a lifetime for south texas. Anyway, Melissa I love all of your work everywhere, your music is awesome, I love listening.
“My plumbing’s busted so I went to NYC…” now that’s a very nice excuse just to get away isn’t it, we’d all love to be able to do the same. Well done Mademoiselle!
I think its Kismet – a storm crashing plumbing for a former smashing pumpkin. But I`m impressed – don’t know anyone else which can post a detailed water system pic in this situation..you’re a real blizzard wizardess.
The week of silence made me already guess that the snow might have taken you hostage. And yes, any excuse is good to travel. Culture is always an interest that suits the soul, and there’s enough culture and art overhere in the old continent (Europe). The Netherlands hold an impressive collection of (local) masters and history can be found on every scarcely lit corner.
And before you know it hours have passed and you’re walking home again… There’s nothing more satisfying than time well spend.
I’m telling you Melissa, you should come out to San Francisco, the weather here is gorgeous: sunny and warm with lots of ‘winter flowers’ bursting all around!
We have a spare couch and everything mate-HAHA!
i wish i could be your plumber:)
dont worry, i send one spirit to fix your plumbing…
for blizzard, i can invite you my next, Izmir-Turkey.
i m not a kind of sexual psycho, i m just count you as an angel:) so you can be my guest anytime you want…
maybe one day you can enter the temple that created for you, my room (i m talking bout about more than hundred pictures of you dear goddess!)… wish more relaxing time for you!
Hi Melissa,
I’m very happy for your blog, so I can have a contact with you. Sorry for my bad english, but I’m Italian and I don’t speak it very well… So, in the place I live the snow is very rare!! The last time I saw snowing it was 1996! In those days it’s very cold, and it’s snowing everywhere in Italy too, but..not where I live. It’s windy, but sunny however…
Now I’m thinking… I saw your concert in Milan last year, on 25 January with A Perfect Circle and the morning after it was snowing, I forgot it! I was there with my best friend and after the show we met you and the band… It was a dream come true, I’ ll never forget!! I send you a kiss, you are the best!
A FRIENDLY HELLO FROM…

hey melissa!!
Nice idea to have a blog so we can “talk” to you.
Well, what i wanted to tell is that I remember the day I bought my guitar. It was a rainy and windy day. When I got home,I was very excited about trying my brand new guitar, but when I plugged it on…guess what happened!!
Yeah, the system broke down. But that wasn’t the worst. The day after, when I plugged in my guitar to try it,I got an electric shock!!
Well,that is my little history,hehe.
I love your music, you’re great melissa!
bye
Don’t ever leave plumbers in your house alone. They’ll drink all your tea and eat all your biscuits. Especially if they’re custard cremes……although there is research that suggests plumbers will eat a wide variety of biscuits during the winter months.
OO grr to crazy plumbing. But maybe you will get some craaaaazy new york vibes into your new tunes!
things couldn’t be all bad..your plumbing sucked but nyc rocked..
Hey melissa!!!!!!!!
Love ya blog!!!!!!!!
meh i wished it snowed here in england but not as harsh.Meh! hope your all safe…keep warm, alive and amplified!
Yours
Mark Morgan

damn… thats not cool… its wierd that it happened in your house thought, i know that like the outdoor pipes have to be shut off durring the winter here in toronto or they burst, but indoors, wow… but your in cali right, so its probably not designed to face the colder weather and the snow… so yeah
You know, I think the word Plumber is from the Latin plumbum, which means lead. Because ancient Rome had very good plumbing of course and they used lead pipes.
Bloody hell. That always happens to me. I meant last year. We had our pipes explode last year.
And we still tried to drive to Nova Scotia but we failed. It was too snowy. There is some level of good fortune to your trip.

Water water everywhere…
Ive never had a blizzard…or touched snow in my whole life either for that matter but I hope all is well when the Irish superhero plumber came to the rescue
I love your cd by the way. My favourite song is ‘Real A Lie’. Just thought Id post that..Have a great day!
Ouch! Sorry to hear about your exploding pipes.
Anyway, I hope you’re doing well. Take care!
Huge hug.

I’m Italian And I Want You To Notice That If You Will Come Here In Rome,You Can Be My Guest.I’ll Show You All The Greatest Roads And Corners of This Fantastic City.I’ll Make You Eat Pizza And Mandolino(the Mandolin Is Sot So Good).Your Freckles Hiypnotize Me,I Heart You.
what i would give for snow right now. but england would fall apart. a little rain and the trains stop moving, the people start lamenting. we’re bothered by the smallest changes. but a big white blizzard would be magical.
I live in a relatively old house, the plumbing is a nightmare, I’m always to be found tinkering with my pipes. Recently I ripped out my bathroom and completly re-plumbed it. I spent some time doing a good job, I’m still working at it now. I’ve moved all the pipes so they either run under the floor or behind the skirting boards now. I find this work extemely rewarding, I get great satisfaction seeing the end product of my labour. I plumbed in a great high pressure enclosed shower. It didn’t take me too long to get the bath and sink installed. I was so confient with my work I was able to turn the water back on and walk away without checking for leaks (almost). Once I had those installed it was time to re-tile the walls and floor. I ordered some great looking tiles but I had to wait several weeks for them to come from Italy – I live in Belfast. The tiles arrived the same day as my gall bladder decided to pack it in, I was rushed to hospital where qualified medical staff were able to deal with my own internal plumbing. I’m not so able bodied as I used to be as I have a 25cm scar across my belly. I’ve got most of the tiles on the walls though it takes me a bit longer now as I can’t lift too much. I soon hope to complete my bathroom. It will be lovely when I’m finished.
As an amatuer I’m fascinated and sometimes baffled with plumbing layouts. I spent a good deal of time working on my central heating system. I’ve worked with the boiler and although its at least 35 years old I’ve got it going at the same efficincey as a modern (fail in 5 years) boiler.
If I’d known sooner, Melissa, I’d have popped round to help you out so you wouldn’t have to have jumped ship and headed off to NYC, which I believe was cold too. Still I spose you have an Irish plumber and you wouldn’t want another one messing it up.
Next time you need some advice Melissa give me a shout. (with a glass) I’m pretty handy.
Fixing a plumbing system is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. Make sure your spanner is clean and well oiled, your toolkit is fully functional and the pressure is just right. If, like me you want to be sure of satisfaction, bring a spare ballcock and make sure its going to fit.
San Francisco, San Francisco…..
Remember, you OWE us an appearence after that November debacle.
Innit? Or wot?
Melissa Auf der Maur = the nicest celebrity-ish rockstar whatever, ever. You’re so sweet, and your album is amazing
I agree with the smoker!!!!

mwah!!!
After first hearing your music at the Curiosa Festival in Atlanta, I had instantly fallen in love with the unique style of you and your band. I journeyed there from Charlotte, NC with one request from a friend, and that was to do my best to meet you for her. I stopped by your merch table and saw a sign about a meet and greet thing later on that day. So I went, and I was blown away by your sincere care and interest in your fans. I intended on going to your website when I got home to leave a post somewhere thanking you for your kindness before you forgot the event, but procrastination got the best of me. Nevertheless, I’m sure a compliment from an admirer is welcome any day.
And it’s awesome that you’ve created a journal for your fans to read, although I’m disappointed it’s not on livejournal where I am, heh. <3
