7 years today…

…my father faced his end.

nick was one of the most lively people i will ever know.
his love of adventure,
newspapers,
history,
classical music at high volumes on sunday morning,
bar stools,
alleyway short cuts,
underground tunnel warm cuts,
taxi rides,
donald duck,
bar buddies,
fedora hats,
silly ties,
naps,
sctv,
belly laughs,
young people,
needy people,
funny people,
serious people,
and me,
sits inside my heart everyday,
to remind me of my father’s beautiful ways of seeing life and being alive.

holding his hand to his end
was the most life altering thing that has ever happened to me.
i thank him for this gift,
and everything he passed on to me through good times, swiss blood and undying love.

i love you more than ever nick,
i miss you today,
and everyday.

love to all the fathers of the world,
from my blog to you.

My sincer condolances and all the best on this day of mixed emotions.
The happy memories of rememberal times …
The emptiness of the hole left behind…

    Love,

    “Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth wood in the lake
    There lies a leafy island
    Where flapping herons wake
    The drowsy water rats
There we’ve hid our fairy vats
    Full of berries
    And of Reddest Stolen Cherries.
    Come away oh human child
To the waters and the wild
With a fairy hand in hand
For the world’s more full of weeping
    Than you can understand

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim grey sands with light
By far off the furthest roses
We foot it all the night
    Weaving olden dances
    Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight
    To and fro we leap
    And chase the frothy bubbles
Whilst the world is full of troubles
And is anxious in it’s sleep

    Come away oh human child
To the waters and the wild
For the world’s more full of weeping
    Than you can understand

    Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above glen car
    In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star
    We seek for slumbering trout
    And whispering in their ears
    Give them unquiet dreams
    Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
    Over the young streams

    Come away oh human child
To the waters and the wild
For the World’s more full of weeping
    Than you can understand

    Away with us he’s going
    The solemned eyed
He’ll bear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
    Sing peace into his breast
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest

    Come away oh human child
To the waters and the wild
For the world’s more full of weeping
    Than you can understand

For he comes, the human child
To the waters and the wild
With a faery hand in hand
For the world is more full of weeping
    Than you can understand.”

By the way, cool videos. The Aries dance is particularly groovy, I reckon.

    Nice ‘new doo’.

    Innit?

    Or wot?

  4. LyricistJen26 says:

    Good evening Melissa,
A 10 year old I knew through my girlfriends neighborhood just died …I can understand the reflections on life and death. Hey I’m an Aries…hurrah for the astrology. haha.
Hope the album is going well and you’re writing is coming easily for you!
    always,
    Jen

  5. smashing_pumpkin says:

I know your life on earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain
You weren’t afraid to face the devil
You were no stranger to the rain

Go rest high on that mountain
Son your work on earth is done
    Go to heaven a-shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son

Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
Wish I could see the angels’ faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing

Go rest high on that mountain
Son, your work on earth is done
    Go to heaven a-shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son.

    Go to heaven a-shoutin’
Love for the Father and the Son.

that song was played at my grandpa’s funeral, and I immediately thought of it when I saw your post.

i’m sorry for your loss, but I’m glad you’re leaning toward celebrating his life rather than mourning over his death.

  6. Tempest says:

I agree that this day must be a mix of emotions for you, Melissa. I am too sorry for the loss, but am glad that you can carry on with fond memories of your father Nick.

  7. Tim Gormley says:

Just said goodbye to my grandmother on Tuesday. It’s so hard to believe that people simply…end.

  8. TrixieBelden says:

    ..

  9. Phil Sherry says:

His loss certainly hasn’t dented your ability to knock together a decent tune, lady. I’m sure he’s real proud, somewhere.

What you really need to do on days like this, is have a few pints with Mr Baines (yes, that one), or make a new friend of Laura and talk about photography. I always feel much better after hanging out with them; you should try it more often. I’m just back from a week in London with them, having recently lost someone very special to me. They rule, and I feel like they lifted a weight off my shoulders.

Looking forward to the new album. You rock.

  10. one freckle of melissa says:

looks like someone is watching you from high high from upper place-heaven…
melissa, you have a real angel!
remember the old times that you had shared and live your life with him!
seven years is nothing for a Divine One;)
    see you soon…

  11. IceShaft says:

Memory..nothing in this world can delete that; since, living, we’re part of that as well.

  12. damn nice says:

the pope died recently, the old drummer from crowded house committed suicide, my black labrador died……… dimebag darrell got murdered last year
i am not scared of dying, i just don’t want to be their when it happens!!! OH DEAR
art garfunkel has that song called bright eyes, go figure.

  13. Jaz says:

It’s kinda strange how when someone you love and care and have immense respect for passes away, there is this whole period where all you do is dwell and ponder “why did they have to go? Why did this have to happen to them?”
It’s not until the grief subsides that you actually begin to realise that despite them not being here in a physical medium, they’ll always be here in a spiritual sense. Their influence over you is still incredible – i know there are times i stop and wonder if my nanna would approve if i went and did this and that! She still can make me feel guilty even if she’s away in a better place!
It’s a cliche, but it’s true – you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. You realise just how much they taught you about the world and yourself and when you realise this through the tears, you can’t help but smile to yourself. All the family members who were taken away from me too soon have left such an impression on me, i’ve taken bits of their wonderful selves and it’s helped mould the person i’ve become. And I couldnt have asked for a greater gift off of them :)
So while death and loss is painful and sad, there is a lot of positivity that can come from it. Well, that’s just what i think anyway.

  14. Phil Sherry says:

Wow. Timing. Since I posted this morning, I’ve been told one of my brothers died last night.

Looks like I’m now the owner of his Rickenbacker bass. I always wanted it off him, but I never wanted it like this.

  15. Dimmu says:

sorry to hear of your loss Phil Sherry. I hope you play his bass like a mystical wind.

I wish you strength and wisdom coming days.

    Regards,

    J.

  16. MdMb says:

Your father seemed like a very interesting man.You sure take a lot after him, because I think you’re one fo the most interesting people I’ve ever “met” (I mean, we haven’t met in person, but all I know about you just makes me admire the way you embrace life).
    I send you a “trans-american” hug.

  17. Black Swan says:

I can’t imagine being with my father when he dies.
But I can’t imagine not being there.

    Fathers are a unique breed.

My dad loves the Chicago Bears, he’s going deaf because he loves to play the drums, he loves Pepsi and peanuts as his nightly snack, he rebuilt our puke green 1969 GMC into a gorgeous, cherry red road machine, and he is going to drive me to work on his motor cycle every morning this summer.

    It’ll be rad.

  18. eloD says:

Mademoiselle, thanks for sharing this with us… a trip down memory lane…take it again and stop right there, a year ago, when you started to embark on one of the most amazing journey: the tour which supported the launch of your 1st solo album, he was there with you, I remember seeing a nice halo around you when you performed for us in Copenhagen.
    Peace out!

  19. SJ Connick says:

Remembering those who have passed can be a difficult time. My thoughts are with you today as you celebrate the life of your Father and experience the impact he has on yours.

People do not “simply..end” as Tim said. Their presence within thier physical bodies end. Energy never ceases.

Not to say that this transition is easy for those left behind, as it is not. However, there is more joy and comfort in celebrating a life lived, rather than the focus being on that it lives no longer in the form to which we grew accustomed.

    Take Care,
    SJ

  20. giornalista says:

I would have dropped by Ziggy’s yesterday for a pint in his honour if I’d have known…

I remember reading your dad’s columns as a kid. Too bad I wasn’t old enough to have been coming up in the journalism biz when he was still around. I’m sure he could have taught me a thing or two.

As for alleyway short-cuts, there’s one on the sunny side of Crescent Street that comes to mind…

    Godspeed You! Rock Empress

  21. marie says:

    This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
    But it’s over
Just hear this and then I’ll go
You gave me more to live for
    More than you’ll ever know

    This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face
Why can’t we overcome this wall
Well, maybe it’s just because I didn’t know you at all

    Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
You know it makes me so angry ’cause I know that in time
I’ll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye

Did you say ’no, this can’t happen to me,’
And did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn’t know him at all
You didn’t know him at all, oh, you didn’t know

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories
    Offer signs that it’s over… it’s over

    jeff buckley – last goodbye
the most consoling song i can think of which affects me the most.i would offer you a hug but i cant stretch that far to montreal

  22. vicki says:

Keep on keeping on…I lost my father 16 years ago as of this october, and understand the mourning/appreciation only too well. My dad lives on to me in the smell of ocean air, polar fleece jackets, espresso, and the version of his face at age 20 that stares back at me from the mirror every day.

I hope you got lots of hugs and belly laughs to commemorate his passing.

  23. Doctor Rock says:

Oh theres those of us out here even as far away as I am in Australia that are very much aware of Nick Auf der Maur via reading.

I myself am impressed by the rich legacy of stories about and by him.

  24. Norton says:

Just wanted to say that there is something sweet and moving to how you are keeping his memory alive, and how so many people have -if only for a moment- shared a moment of their lives to wish you well, and offer their emotions to combine with yours.

*hugs to all, especially the Lady of the blog… whose album is firmly-fixed on my Ipod*

  25. JP7537 says:

    Hello Mellisa,

I share your feelings on having to deal with the death of a cherished one. I lost my own father 14 years ago yesterday (April 12th). It happened in a rather brutal way, very publicizied cab driver’s death in Montreal. For over a decade, i’ve felt like there was something missing and yet, it is today that i’m starting to make sense of what i actually had all this time: i had his love, his smile and his trust all along. He is no longer here to tell me all of this but i can feel it now more than ever.

May your Father’s smile remain with you forever!

Keep on rocking! looking forward to your new record !!

    JP

    just finished reading this post..
between the funny and the serious i suddenly and subtly smelled the cologne that my father used to wear to work. he’s been gone almost two years. i know he was having fun just those few short minutes ago..
..it says mounds about his and my inherited humor.

    Hi,

I’m sorry for being intrusive in to your blog. But I am Melissa and I am a mother of two that is just trying to get out of an incredible financial debt. See my hubby is away in Iraq trying to protect this great country that we live in, and I am at home with our two kids telling bill collectors please be patiant. When my husband returns from war we will beable to catch up on our payments. We have already had are 2001 Ford repossessed from the bank, and are now down to a 83 buick that is rusted from front to back and the heater don’t work, and tire tax is due in November.

I’m not asking for your pitty because we got our ownselfs into this mess but we would love you and thank you in our prayers if you would just keep this link on your blog for others to view.

    God Bless You.
